• Step 2: Once at the Emerald Grove Environs, proceed west and cross a bridge. This will take you to the goblin-infested area known as the “Blighted Village.” 
• Step 3: Exit the Blighted Village to the north and cross another bridge, using a jump to clear a gap. At the fork in the path, turn east. 
• Step 4: While on this path, be prepared to face hyenas, and possibly gnolls if you can’t prevent their transformation. Continue along this path until you spot a bridge to the northeast. 
• Step 5: Cross this bridge, and you’ll arrive at the Toll House. Karlach isn’t located here, but it’s in close proximity and relevant to your quest, so remember this place. 
• Note: While there are alternate routes to avoid the Blighted Village and the hyenas, be aware that if you can’t handle goblins and hyenas, you might struggle in a potential battle at the Toll House. 
• Step 6: From the Toll House, Karlach is just a short distance to the south. Look for a ladder that leads down to the path leading to her. To find her exact location, follow the trail of blood. You’ll encounter Karlach across a log, approximately at coordinates (x=110, y=500). 

How to Recruit Karlach 

• Step 1: To get on Karlach’s good side, choose dialogue options that are not aggressive. Hostile choices will lead to a confrontation. If you avoid a fight, Karlach will be eager to make friends. 
• Step 2: Your bond with Karlach will be strengthened by the presence of the parasites you both share. This shared experience sheds light on Karlach’s character and motivations. 
• Step 3: Karlach may also mention some false paladins at the Toll House, exposing their true nature. She might encourage you to help her eliminate them. 
• Step 4: Agree to assist Karlach with dealing with the false paladins. If there’s space in your party, she’ll join you. If your party is full, she’ll head to your camp. This marks the beginning of the “Hunt the Devil” quest. 
• Note: Alternatively, you can trigger the “Hunt the Devil” quest by entering the Toll House and speaking with one of the paladins named Anders. He’ll offer you the Sword of Justice if you bring back Karlach’s head.

How to Recruit Karlach and Keep Will in the Party

• Step 1: If you have Wyll in your party when you meet Karlach, he will confront her, and their conflict will take center stage. But you can prevent violence by not going along with Wyll’s aggressive impulses. 
• Step 2: During the confrontation, before any decisions are made, the tadpole will interrupt the scene. This peculiar twist of fate uses the mental connection created by the tadpole to work in Karlach’s favor. 
• Step 3: Encourage Wyll to believe what he saw during this interruption. You won’t need to pass a skill check; it’s an automatic event. You’ll also have the option to say, “Gods, you’re stubborn. Karlach’s not a devil, and you know it,” or “You saw her thoughts. She poses no danger to the Sword Coast.” 
• Step 4: Convincing Wyll to stand down in this way will be well-received by your party members. 
• Note: If you didn’t bring Wyll with you initially and recruited Karlach, Wyll will confront Karlach the next time you take a Long Rest. The interaction plays out almost the same way, with everyone in your camp approving if you make peace between the two. No skill checks or dice rolls are required for this. 
• Step 5: Either way, the quest “Hunt the Devil” will be initiated. To complete it, you have two options: you can either kill Karlach and bring her head to the paladins at the Toll House, or eliminate the aforementioned paladins, whether or not Karlach is in your party. Both routes will be covered in subsequent steps.
